Powys
Powys covers the former administrative counties of Montgomeryshire and Radnorshire, most of Brecknockshire, and a small part of Denbighshire making it the largest principal area in Wales by land area. Most of Powys is made up of mountainous areas. By far the most known area of Powys to the tourist is the Brecon Beacons a range of mountains that forms the central section of the Brecon Beacons National Park.

The Brecon Beacons are named after the ancient practice of lighting signal fires (beacons) on mountains to warn of attacks by the English. Popular for Pony rides the Beacons really are a wonderful place to visit.

Another interesting place to visit is the Brecknock Museum. The museum displays a wide range of local artifacts from both prehistory covering the Stone Age, the Bronze Age, the Iron Age and the period of Roman Britain, Roman Wales and the Dark Ages and the emergence of Brycheiniog, plus exhibits from the historical period covering medieval and later history.

The largest town is Newtown. The town of Newtown (Drenewydd in Welsh) is steeped in history and came into being in 1321. Situated on the banks of the River Severn in one of the most visually arresting areas in Wales
